Background: Kurogane was a happy, lovely little boy, growing up in Japan as the son of the Lord of Suwa. His mother would keep the barriers surrounding Suwa in place, keeping the nasty monsters out, and if any monsters did get in Kurogane’s daddy would go and fight then. He loved his parents very much, and wanted to grow up so he could be big and strong like his daddy and protect his parents and anyone else special to him.
Unfortunately, Kurogane’s mother became ill, and so his daddy was away a lot more fighting the monsters. One day, he came home beaten up, and on that day, Kurogane’s mother was killed as she prayed to keep the barriers in place: a hand came through a hole from another world and stabbed her right through. Kurogane doesn’t know to this day who did it, but he does know he will kill that person when he finds them.
With all of Suwa dead (hopefully killed by the monsters, but with nothing stated and Kurogane in a half-mad homicidal state, there is another horrible possibility), Kurogane was taken in by Princess Tomoyo. He was one of her ninja bodyguard, simply wishing to become stronger for the sake of being stronger, killing anyone who attempted to invade Shirasaki castle. Eventually Princess Tomoyo had enough of this and sent Kurogane to Yuuko, the Dimensional Witch (or Dimensional Bitch as Kurogane has fondly nicknamed her). Kurogane’s only wish was to get back home to his world, and, along with Syaoran (his wish being that he wanted to travel worlds in order to gather Princess Sakura’s feathers) and Fay (he wanted to travel to many worlds in order to avoid his own), paid for Mokona in order to travel worlds. Kurogane had to give Yuuko is sword, Ginryuu, and has sworn to get it back.
He didn’t intend to help Syaoran gather Sakura’s feathers, but ended up doing so because at first he couldn’t resist a fight and later because he liked the kid (he will never admit that). He also found himself growing closer to the mage – at least, he would be, if the damn mage let anyone get close. Kurogane wants the idiot to just stop lying and face up to his problems – he gets continually frustrated with him. But also, there is the desire to help Fay, even though Kurogane won’t admit that either. Whatever happened to the mage must have been pretty bad to affect him like this.
Kurogane arrives in Empyrean after leaving Rekord. He’s not a happy puppy, having somehow lost the children and the mage and is already confused and pissed about Fay breaking the personal vow he’s had since the start of their adventures.
Personality: Kurogane’s first scene in the manga shows him standing on a roof, covered in blood and laughing about how weak all his attackers were. He’s not a chocolates and flowers kind of guy (in fact, he hates any kind of sweet things). He comes across as callous, violent, and easily angered. Though his temper remains pretty much the same, he does start to show a softer side. He doesn’t waste time with words, instead showing affection by speaking bluntly and just being there. He won’t abandon anyone and will fight to the death for those important to him. He’s extremely loyal, almost annoyingly so, and is kind of like a terrier at times: once he’s got something, he won’t let it go.
He also has some childish qualities, mainly being slightly petulant at times, but it wouldn’t be wrong to say he’s grown up over the course of the manga. What’s his is his, and he will keep it at all costs.
